In a survey by the Association for Supply Chain Management (ASCM), almost two-thirds of Canadian supply chain professionals landed their current position within three months of starting their search. What’s more, most of those individuals enjoy their work: in a separate survey by ASCM and Supply Chain Canada, 69 per cent of respondents were happy with their jobs, rating their satisfaction at least eight on a scale of one to 10.

The importance of health and safety in the workplace cannot be overstated. That's why occupational health and safety (OHS) professionals focus on preventing workplace accidents and injuries and promoting employee well-being. They do this by creating policies and providing training on emergency evacuations, hazardous material handling, machine lockout procedures, fall prevention, harassment, and much more.

In early 2020, Monica Keyes-Cabral was at a crossroads: her career as a paramedic, which she thoroughly enjoyed, was taking a toll on her mental health.

She left her job just before the pandemic was declared. But she still wanted a meaningful role that allowed her to help people and support their well-being.

She investigated different training options and eventually chose the Occupational Health and Safety program at Herzing.

After an intense year of juggling online studies and helping her three young children adapt to COVID realities, Monica recently graduated—and landed a job at the same place where she did her internship.

You may have heard that thanks to artificial intelligence, bookkeepers and accounting technicians are being automated out of existence.

The World Economic Forum identified accounting, payroll and bookkeeping clerks as at-risk jobs that are set to become increasingly redundant.

But that's based on the notion that bookkeepers are little more than data entry clerks. For those who are eager to take on more analytical and advisory responsibilities, the move to automation can actually be a good thing.

"The current automation of accounting is mostly on repetitive tasks,” says Cindy Cao. She’s a curriculum designer who has developed college courses for accounting and payroll as well as business administration programs.

“This can be a positive change for students who want to pursue a career in accounting. They can focus more energy on analyzing the accounting information rather than being trapped in repetition."

The bottom line? Accounting professionals are still in demand, but the way they do their jobs is changing.

If you’re considering alternatives to a four-year health and safety degree, you may be looking into college-level health and safety programs. In this case, understanding your path to certification is crucial. 

Kierstin Whitney didn’t always have a clear focus for her career path. She just knew that she wanted to have a positive impact on people’s lives.

After high school, she worked a bunch of different jobs, taking note of what she enjoyed and looking for new opportunities to grow and learn. She finally realized her true passion was health and safety.

It was intimidating to go back to school, but she knew she needed some specialized training. She took the leap, enrolled in the online OHS program through Herzing College—and never looked back.

We caught up with Kierstin to find out how she found the whole experience.

Ashley Benish first developed an interest in accounting while working in customer service at a bank.

She really enjoyed working with numbers, solving problems, and helping clients with their banking needs.

When she became a mom, she stepped away from the work world for a few years to focus on raising her children. But she always intended to get back into the accounting field.

And when her kids got a little older and the time was right to upgrade her skills, Ashley chose the Accounting and Payroll Administrator program at Herzing College.

We spoke with her recently to see how she found the whole experience.
