While the world continues to present its inhabitants with continually evolving challenges, it is critical that we all do what we can to prevent suicide. The stigma surrounding suicide continues to present a barrier to those people in dire need of support.
The Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP) is a key resource. This year, September 10th is designated as World Suicide Prevention Day.
Who Is At Risk?
There is a strong link between suicide and mental disorders. At the top of this list are depression and alcohol use disorders. Previous suicide attempts are another strong risk factor.
While suicidal ideation and planning are often present, there are many instances of impulsive suicidal behaviour during crises. This typically occurs when there is a breakdown in a person’s ability to cope with stressors. Major life challenges such as financial problems, chronic pain and illness, and relationship tensions are often the source of desperate behaviours.
