Zouhir Kherroubi had years of experience with information technology firms in his native Algeria. But he quickly discovered that he needed further training to get where he wanted to go in the Canadian labour market.
The hands-on computer networking technology program at Herzing matched his ambitions perfectly. He graduated in November 2022 and is now a Senior Analyst at a global IT consulting company.
We connected with Zouhir this week to get his thoughts on the training and how it shaped his career path. Read on for his story.
Q. Zouhir, could you share a bit about your background? What were you doing before Herzing?
Zouhir: Before coming to Canada, I worked in Algeria as a District Supervisor for PMI, a global leader in the tobacco industry. Prior to that, I held various roles in web agencies and IT companies, serving as a manager, marketing manager, and customer representative.
Q. Why did you decide to go back to school?
Zouhir: My previous qualifications weren’t cutting it in the Canadian job market. When I came here, I was working as a machine operator, but I knew I wanted more out of my career. Going back to school was the best way for me to update my skills and increase my chances of landing a better job that matched my ambitions.
Q. What led you to choose the computer networking technology program at Herzing?
Zouhir: I chose the computer networking program at Herzing because it seemed like the perfect fit for what I wanted. Herzing has a great reputation for teaching tech stuff well, and their program looked like it would give me the hands-on skills I needed. Plus, they offer industry certifications, which is a big deal in the IT world. So it just made sense for me to go there to learn about computer networking.
Q. What was your overall experience in the program?
Zouhir: My experience in the program was incredibly positive. I found the coursework engaging and relevant. Instructor Maqbool Azam was particularly outstanding, as he was not only knowledgeable but also very supportive, always willing to help students understand difficult concepts.
The hands-on learning opportunities were especially valuable, allowing me to apply what I learned in real-world scenarios. The program provided ample opportunities for networking and professional development, which helped me build connections within the industry.
Overall, I feel well prepared to pursue a career in computer networking thanks to the excellent experience I had at Herzing.
Q. What were the main skills you learned in the program?
Zouhir: I gained a deep understanding of networking fundamentals, including concepts such as TCP/IP protocols, subnetting, and network security. I also became proficient in configuring and troubleshooting network devices such as routers and switches, which is crucial for maintaining network infrastructure.
I honed my skills in network design and implementation, learning how to plan and deploy robust and scalable networks to meet business needs. Furthermore, I gained hands-on experience with various networking technologies and tools.
I also earned important certifications like CompTIA A+, which are highly valued in the job market.
Q. Tell us about your internship. Where did you work and what kinds of things did you do?
Zouhir: I did my internship at Virtual Xcellence. Primarily, I was tasked with resolving network issues. That involved troubleshooting connectivity issues, diagnosing network hardware failures, and optimizing network performance.
I was also involved in application debugging and integrating applications to streamline business processes and ensure operational efficiency.
In addition to technical responsibilities, I actively participated in marketing campaigns. I contributed to the development of promotional materials, social media strategies, and client outreach initiatives.
Q. Where are you working now? Describe your current role.
Zouhir: I am currently working as a Senior Analyst at HCLTech Canada, assigned to the SUNCOR project. I deliver technical support, optimize operational workflows, and provide leadership to a high-performing helpdesk team.
Q. What advice would you give someone who was considering the computer networking program at Herzing?
Zouhir: Approach it with enthusiasm. Embrace hands-on learning opportunities and seek mentorship. Build a strong foundation in networking fundamentals and stay updated on emerging technologies.
