As most people know, the COVID-19 crisis has been particularly stressful and dangerous for elderly citizens in long-term care facilities.

Older people with weakened immune systems or pre-existing health conditions are more vulnerable to the novel coronavirus.

Meanwhile, social distancing rules have also taken a toll, isolating seniors from family and friends, and restricting their participation in community activities.

Never have we relied so heavily on the dedication, skill, and compassion of long-term health care professionals to keep our loved ones safe and well. Nurses, care home staff, and personal support workers are on the front-lines of this struggle.

Gladys Gonzales was already very well educated when she arrived in Canada from the Philippines. She had a university degree plus several years of work experience as a care-giver and domestic helper.

But she was looking for something more. When her elderly client passed away, she decided to return to school and earn a Canadian diploma, so she would have better career options here in Ottawa.

Gladys enrolled in the Business Management diploma program at Herzing College, and 12 months later, landed her first job as an Accounts Payable Clerk with Richcraft Homes Ltd - one of Ottawa's largest and most successful home building companies.

This week, we interviewed Gladys to get her opinion of Herzing's program, and find out how things are going at work. We talked about her instructors, the skills she learned in class, how long it took to get hired, and her new job at Richcraft.

Here's what we found out.

She did her research, figured out which business jobs had strong demand, and decided accounting and payroll was the right choice.

6 months ago, she graduated from Herzing's Accounting and Payroll course, and got hired immediately as a receptionist/accounting assistant.

Going back to school and starting a brand new career isn't easy. We interviewed Cris this week to find out what the process was like for her.

We asked her to review the Accounting and Payroll program, including her opinion of the instructors, courses, internship, and career support services.

Majeeda Khan graduated from the Paralegal program in 2017, and now works at Smart & Biggar as a legal assistant in the litigation department

Majeeda had graduated from university, and was working in retail, when she decided she needed a new career plan. She wasn't finding work in her field of study, and wanted a job that would be challenging, interesting, and truly helpful to others.

That's when she paid a visit to the Herzing Ottawa campus in the St. Laurent mall, and began asking about available training programs. She'd never even considered becoming a paralegal, but after looking into the field, she realized it was a perfect fit for her natural skills and professional goals.

After that, everything fell into place.

We chatted with Majeeda this week to get her opinion of the Paralegal program, and see what she's up to now. Turns out she is working at the biggest, most successful intellectual property law firm in Canada!

This is such a great success story. Read on for all the details.
