## WHY DOES A FASTER TIMELINE ACTUALLY MATTER?

**Every extra semester you spend in school is a semester you’re not earning a paycheque in your field.** That’s the real cost of a longer program—not just tuition, but lost time and lost income.

Say you’re pivoting from another field to cybersecurity. A standard three-year applied bachelor’s degree means three more years before you’re ready to work in the field full time. Herzing’s program cuts eight months off that wait.

The reason is simple: most academic years run two semesters, September to April, with summers off. This program keeps going in the May-through-August period, so you study year-round. That lets you finish your degree much sooner.

 

## WHAT ARE YOU TRADING OFF TO SAVE TIME?

**Nothing in the curriculum**. A shorter timeline naturally raises the question: are you getting a lighter version of the degree? Absolutely not.

You complete the full 90 academic credits, plus a dedicated work-integrated learning semester with 300 hours of real-world experience. The courses cover the same ground, from foundational networking and programming through to advanced topics like penetration testing, digital forensics, cryptography, and machine learning.

The content is the same; only the calendar changes. You’re compressing the gaps between semesters.

The pace does mean a more intensive load, since you’re in class through the summer too. You need to be clear about that trade-off: less downtime between semesters, but a faster path to the finish line.

 

## CAN PAST LEARNING GET YOU THERE EVEN FASTER?

**If you already have related education, you may not need to start from scratch.** Herzing looks at what you’ve already completed and gives you credit for it, so you’re not sitting through material you’ve already mastered.

This matters if you’re a career changer with a related diploma, or a newcomer with post-secondary credentials from another program or country. Herzing will conduct an academic assessment of your transcript and apply transfer credits where they fit. One thing worth knowing going in: because some courses build directly on earlier ones, transfer credits don’t always shorten your overall timeline. But even when they don’t, they still mean less course time and less tuition expenses for you.

**This program suits people who are ready for a focused, full-time commitment.** Studying year-round without long summer breaks is intense, so be honest with yourself about your schedule before you commit.

You don’t need a background in cybersecurity or IT to apply. And the program is delivered online, so you can study from home while still getting live, weekly instructor support.

## FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 What’s the difference between an applied bachelor’s degree and a traditional bachelor’s degree?

A traditional bachelor’s degree is granted by a university and tends to be more theoretical, with broader elective options. An applied bachelor’s degree, like Herzing’s, is granted by a college and focuses on hands-on, career-ready skills, with work-integrated learning built into the program. Both are held to the same degree-level quality standards—the difference is in focus and delivery, not academic rigour.

 How long does it usually take to earn a cybersecurity degree in Canada?

A traditional applied bachelor’s degree typically takes about three years. Herzing’s Bachelor of Applied Cybersecurity is an accelerated version of that credential. Even with 300 hours of work-integrated learning, the program can be completed in 28 months by studying year-round instead of taking long pauses each summer.

 What is work-integrated learning?

Work-integrated learning is where you apply what you’ve learned in a real workplace instead of a classroom. Co-ops, internships, and practicums and are all examples of work-integrated learning.

 Do I need an IT background to start?

No. The program starts with foundational courses in cybersecurity, networking, and programming, so you don’t need prior experience in the field to apply.

On the other hand, if you’ve taken related IT courses, you may be able to get transfer credit that reduces the number of courses required to get your degree.

 Can I complete this fully online?

Yes. The program is delivered online, though some courses are synchronous (done in real time) while others are asynchronous (no fixed times). However, the work-integrated learning portion may need to be done in person, depending on your placement.
