How to Become an International Student at Herzing College Montreal

Each year, hundreds of international students enrol in Herzing College Montreal for quality career-focused training.

Many students choose our programs because they’re designed to teach the knowledge and skills today’s employers look for.

If you’re hoping to come to Montreal to study at Herzing, you must meet our entrance requirements and obtain the necessary immigration documents from both the provincial and federal governments.

Confused and overwhelmed by the process? Not to worry.

We wrote this post to give you a clear breakdown of the steps involved in becoming an international student at Herzing.

Here’s what you need to do.

1. CHECK THAT YOU MEET ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The first step is making sure you’re eligible for admission.

For starters, you must be a high school graduate and be at least 18 years old when your program begins.

You must also demonstrate proficiency in English or French.

For English language proficiency, we accept TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or Duolingo scores as follows:

  • TOEFL—498-546 on the written version (pBT), 170-210 on the computer-based version (cBT), or 60-78 on the internet-based version (iBT)
  • IELTS—6.0, with no band less than 5.5
  • PTE—50-58
  • Duolingo—95-100

Note: If your high school (or equivalent) was instructed in English, a language proficiency test is not required.

If you plan to enrol in one of our French programs, you must achieve a B1 level (for DEP programs) or a B2 level (for AEC programs) on the CEFR.

Meet all those requirements? Good. Now you can apply for admission.

2. GET A LETTER OF ACCEPTANCE FROM HERZING

To study at a college in Quebec, you have to get a letter of acceptance from the institution you plan to attend.

Before Herzing can issue a letter of acceptance, you need to complete the international student application form.

You must also provide scanned copies of:

  • Your original birth certificate and official translation into English or French
  • Your latest diploma(s) and transcript(s) of secondary and post-secondary education
  • The photo page of your passport that shows your date of birth

Submit all of those documents to internationalrecruitment@mtl.herzing.ca.

You also need to pay a nonrefundable registration fee of $250. That fee will be deducted from the total cost of your training if you complete all the steps and become a Herzing student.

Herzing will process your application after the registration fee is paid and the proper documents are submitted.

Note: A letter of acceptance does not guarantee you a place in the program. Rather, it gets you on a waiting list until you receive your CAQ and study permit (see steps 3 and 4 below).

If you’re an independent student not working with an agent, you can choose to have us help you with the process of obtaining your CAQ and study permit.

3. OBTAIN A CERTIFICAT D’ACCEPTATION DU QUEBEC (CAQ)

Foreign nationals who wish to study in Montreal for more than six months must obtain a CAQ from the Quebec government.

To get a CAQ, you need to file an online application for temporary selection for studies.

This requires submitting:

  • A copy of your passport
  • Your letter of acceptance from Herzing
  • Proof that you can cover the costs of studying and living in Quebec*
  • A nonrefundable application fee of $120

*Depending on the country you live in, you may need to provide this proof to the federal authorities instead, who will assess it as part of your study permit application (step 4 below).

Once your application for a CAQ is approved, you can apply for a study permit.

4. OBTAIN A STUDY PERMIT FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA

You need a study permit to attend college in Canada as an international student. You typically need to apply online before you come to Canada.

To apply, you must provide:

  • A copy of your passport (if you’re approved, you’ll then have to send the original)
  • Two recent passport-sized photos
  • Your letter of acceptance from Herzing
  • Your CAQ (or letter of approval)
  • A fee of $150

Other documents may also be required. Learn more from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

If you apply from outside Canada and your application is approved, IRCC will send you a letter of introduction containing your permit reference number.

You must present this letter of introduction to the border services officer when you arrive in Canada. You will then receive your study permit.

If needed, IRCC will also issue you a temporary resident visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) to enter Canada.

5. CONFIRM YOUR PLACE IN THE PROGRAM

To confirm your seat in your chosen program at Herzing, you must send us the details of your CAQ and study permit as soon as you get them.

Once we have that information, we’ll send you an educational contract.

The contract will contain all the details about your program start date, tuition fees, payment terms, cancellation policies, etc.

It will also include details on your health insurance, which all international students who study in Canada are required to have. Herzing provides this through StudyInsured as part of your tuition. Coverage begins as soon as you leave your home country.

To get a guaranteed seat in your program, you must sign the contract and send it back to us. We will then send you an email confirming your seat.

Note: Do not purchase a plane ticket until you receive confirmation that you have a seat in the program.
