If you’re thinking about a career in cybersecurity, you’ve probably noticed there’s more than one way to get there.

Many cybersecurity job postings call for a degree, but many employers are also willing to accept candidates with diplomas. The truth is that in the IT world, employers are often more interested in what you can do rather than what credentials you hold.

So if you want to expand your skill set, which educational path should you choose?

Herzing offers both a [cybersecurity diploma](https://www.herzing.ca/programs/cybersecurity) and a [Bachelor of Applied Cybersecurity](https://www.herzing.ca/programs/bachelor-of-applied-cybersecurity) degree, and which one is right for you depends on your goals, your timeline, and how far you want to take your career.

Here’s a clear look at how the two programs compare.

## WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CYBERSECURITY DIPLOMA AND A CYBERSECURITY DEGREE?

At Herzing, the cybersecurity diploma gets you job-ready fast with hands-on, certification-aligned training. The degree takes longer, but it builds deeper technical skills, research abilities, and leadership training for a wider range of roles.

Both programs cover core cybersecurity skills like threat detection, network security, and ethical hacking. The degree builds on that foundation with more advanced coursework, including in machine learning for security, digital forensics, cryptography, and governance, risk, and compliance (GRC).

| | [**Cybersecurity**](https://www.herzing.ca/programs/cybersecurity) | [**Bachelor of Applied Cybersecurity**](https://www.herzing.ca/programs/bachelor-of-applied-cybersecurity) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Length | 12 months | 28 months |
| Delivery | Online | Online |
| Work Experience | 5-week internship | 300 hours of work-integrated learning |
| Credential | Diploma | Bachelor's degree |
| Focus | Practical, certification-aligned training | Technical depth, research, and  leadership |

## HOW LONG DOES EACH PROGRAM TAKE?

The diploma takes 12 months to complete, including a five-week internship. It’s designed to move quickly so you can start working sooner.

The degree can be completed in 28 months, including 300 hours of work-integrated learning. That might sound like a long time, but it’s actually an accelerated timeline. Because the program runs year-round instead of taking traditional summer breaks, you finish in less time than an applied bachelor’s degree typically takes.

**Pro tip:** Herzing cybersecurity diploma holders can transfer up to 24 credits (out of 90 total) toward the degree. That means you would already be a quarter of the way there.

## WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN EACH PROGRAM?

The diploma focuses on practical, hands-on training aligned with industry-recognized IT security certifications. You’ll learn the tools and tactics used in real cybersecurity roles, like identifying threats, securing networks, and responding to incidents.

The degree covers those same fundamentals, then goes further. You’ll study:

- Machine learning and AI applications in network security
- Cryptography and secure system design
- Digital forensics and incident response
- Governance, risk, and compliance
- Penetration testing and ethical hacking

The degree also includes courses outside the technical curriculum, like professional writing, statistics, and entrepreneurship. These round out your skill set with the communication and business knowledge that leadership roles often call for. You’ll finish with a capstone research project, where you apply everything you’ve learned to a real cybersecurity problem.

## WHAT KIND OF JOBS CAN EACH CREDENTIAL PREPARE YOU FOR?

Diploma graduates are prepared for entry-level cybersecurity roles where hands-on technical skills matter most:

- Network administrator
- Junior penetration tester
- Security analyst

Degree graduates can pursue a wider range of roles, including:

- Security operations centre (SOC) analyst
- Threat intelligence analyst
- Incident response analyst
- Network security administrator
- Ethical hacker

The degree’s broader curriculum, including research and governance training, can also help you prepare for roles with more responsibility down the road.

## WHO IS EACH PROGRAM FOR?

Here's a side-by-side comparison to help you decide.

| **The [cybersecurity diploma](https://www.herzing.ca/programs/cybersecurity) might be right for you if:** | **The [Bachelor of Applied Cybersecurity](https://www.herzing.ca/programs/bachelor-of-applied-cybersecurity) might be right for you if:** |
| --- | --- |
| You want to start working within a year | You're interested in research, governance, or AI-driven security work |
| You prefer a focused, certification-aligned curriculum | You want to be prepared for roles beyond entry-level analyst positions |
| You're testing out the field before committing to a longer program | You're comfortable investing more time in your education |
| You want to build core technical skills first | You value a credential that carries more weight for career advancement |

## CAN YOU START WITH A DIPLOMA AND BUILD TOWARD THE DEGREE?

Yes. If you’ve already completed post-secondary coursework or a diploma in cybersecurity, networking, or IT, you may be able to transfer some of those credits toward the degree program. If you have a cybersecurity diploma from Herzing, you can get credit for roughly one-quarter of the classes required for the degree.

## WHICH PROGRAM SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

There’s no universal right answer. It comes down to how much time you want to invest now and where you want your career to go.

If you want to start working as soon as possible, [the diploma](https://www.herzing.ca/programs/cybersecurity) is a direct, focused path. If you’re ready to invest a bit more time for a credential that opens up more advanced roles and leadership potential, [the degree](https://www.herzing.ca/programs/bachelor-of-applied-cybersecurity) is worth a closer look.

Not sure which path fits? Talk to an admissions advisor. They can walk you through both programs and help you figure out what makes sense for your goals.

## FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is a cybersecurity degree the same as a cybersecurity diploma?

No. A diploma is a shorter, hands-on program focused on job-ready technical skills. A degree takes longer and adds research, governance, and leadership training on top of the technical foundation.

Can you get a cybersecurity job with a diploma?

Yes. Herzing's cybersecurity diploma is designed to prepare you for entry-level cybersecurity roles. You can get your foot in the door and then work your way up to more advanced positions.

How long does it take to complete Herzing’s cybersecurity degree?

The Bachelor of Applied Cybersecurity can be completed in 28 months thanks to its accelerated, year-round schedule.

Can diploma credits count toward the bachelor’s degree?

Yes. If you’ve completed relevant post-secondary studies, you may qualify for transfer credits through an academic assessment. A cybersecurity diploma from Herzing counts for about one-quarter of the degree requirements.

The overall program length may not change, however, since some courses must be taken in a certain order.
