Life is all about experiences. They turn a mere existence into a fascinating journey through the unknown and exciting. Having spent a year in Toronto, I can confidently say that studying abroad is one of those experiences.
At first sight, travelling across the globe seems very intimidating. It took me a while to take my courage in both hands and apply for my program of choice.
The opportunities were too big to miss. Toronto is one of the best cities in the world to do business, consistently ranked at the top when it comes to global competitiveness, employment opportunities and quality of life.
A leader in education and research, it has a wide variety of academic institutions that offer a huge range of courses for every taste.
Herzing College caught my eye because their business program has a great selection of courses which give you a general idea about Canadian business and prepare you well for a new career path.
People working at Herzing are aware and very understanding of the difficulties faced by international students. For many of us Canada is a very different country in terms of politics, administration and social order.
After finishing my studies, I can confirm that the college staff attended to all my needs and tried to make my studying process as comfortable as possible.
The program was very well planned, as we only studied one subject at a time. It gave us a chance to concentrate on one discipline and make time for other things, since many students had to work or take care of their families.
Our professor was one of the greatest people I've ever met. A self-made man, not only did he teach us the textbook course, but he also shared his own experience, which was particularly interesting.
He became more than just a teacher to us, all of us could confide in him and ask for advice regarding school and personal matters. Our group was a true melting pot! We were all from different countries but no one felt like a foreigner.
A year passed by too quickly and I had to face another challenge of finding an internship. Herzing College is in partnership with the City of Toronto and, luckily, as I was finishing school, the City was looking for an intern for one of their projects.
The interview process was nerve-racking! Fortunately, our campus president was there and did everything to help all the students to show their best side. When I was told I got the job, I was on top of the world.
How exciting it is to work for largest city in the very heart of downtown! Working for the City turned out to be a very interesting and valuable experience which gave me an opportunity to put to the test everything that I've learned.
The projects that I'm working on are aimed at helping international students make their first steps in Toronto. It is a very rewarding experience for me, as I had to come through everything myself.
Don't get me wrong, studying abroad is not a piece of cake. It requires a lot of effort and determination.
However, at the end of the day, it is all worth it, because in return for your hard work you get an amazing opportunity to fully realize your potential.
Therefore, I encourage all the students who chose a similar path to never give up on their dreams and remember: "If your dreams don't scare you, they are not big enough."
